Contra Costa Times endorses Measure D 3/27/09

Information:
On May 19th, 2009 voters in MDUSD will vote on Measure D, a $99 school funding measure to provide the district with an estimated $7 million annually in reliable, local funding for students, teachers and quality education. This will be money the state cannot take away to fix its budget problems. The measure needs two-thirds voter approval. The board has voted on a priority list of items to be restored, starting with the most recent reductions including funding for high school sports, librarians, 4th grade music, VP's, custodians, etc.

History:
The Mt. Diablo School District has been hit hard with state budget cuts. The district has had to cut $30 million dollars over the last 2 years. There have been 5 consecutive years of budget cuts. Just this year, there have been 15 million dollars in cuts, and more may be coming. Over 500 pink slips went home to teachers, staff and employees of the MDUSD this year. The future of employment for many, are still uncertain.

Protect Our Local Schools:
The school board has already voted to end High School Sports funding, 4th grade instrumental music, custodial staff and our Vice Principals (among many other very important programs and staff). Local funding gives us more control over our schools. Passing Measure D may allow us to restore some programs already cut. It will protect vital classroom programs against further state cuts and will provide our students with quality education including reading, writing, math and science.

Facts:

  • Measure D will allow for a senior exemption.
  • Will provide NO money for district office administrator salaries.
  • Will provide strict accountability measures, including an independent citizen oversight committee.
  • The School Board voted on a resolution to make Tier 1 and Tier 2 add backs a priority when funding become available. READ MORE
